AI Content Repurposing: One Piece of Content, Ten Formats

Content creation is one of the biggest time drains in any modern business — and also one of the most easily systematised. Most founders are stuck in a cycle of starting from scratch every time they need to post, write, or record something. The result is either inconsistent output or burnout. AI content repurposing breaks that cycle entirely. Create once, distribute everywhere.

The Core Idea: Start With a Pillar

The repurposing system starts with one high-quality piece of content — what I call the pillar. A pillar is typically a long-form piece: a podcast episode, a detailed blog post, a video, a webinar, or a lengthy LinkedIn article. This is the source material from which everything else flows. You do not need ten ideas this week — you need one great one, developed thoroughly.

The reason most content strategies fail is that they treat every piece of content as its own creation project. This is exhausting and unsustainable. The repurposing model flips the math. One hour of substantive thinking, captured in one long-form piece, becomes ten pieces of content. The AI handles the transformation. You handle the original thinking.

The Ten Formats from One Piece

Here is what one pillar piece can become with AI assistance. First, a long-form blog post of 1,000 to 1,500 words — which may be the pillar itself. Second, a condensed LinkedIn article of 500 to 700 words that captures the core argument. Third, five to seven LinkedIn posts — individual insights, questions, or contrarian takes drawn from the source material. Fourth, an email newsletter issue that delivers the key takeaway in a personal, conversational tone. Fifth, a carousel structure for Instagram or LinkedIn — five to eight slides, each capturing one point.

Sixth, three to five short-form video scripts — designed for TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts. Seventh, a Twitter or X thread — ten to fifteen connected points or observations. Eighth, a Pinterest graphic description or caption. Ninth, a podcast show notes document if the pillar was a recording. Tenth, an FAQ or a "questions this post answers" piece for SEO purposes.

How to Prompt AI for Repurposing

The quality of your repurposed content depends almost entirely on how you instruct the AI. Vague prompts produce generic output. Specific prompts — combined with examples of your own voice — produce content that actually sounds like you. The key is to train your AI tool on your tone before asking it to produce content.

Give Claude or ChatGPT your pillar piece, then prompt it specifically: "Using this article as your source, write three LinkedIn posts. Each post should stand alone, be under 250 words, and use a direct, conversational tone — no buzzwords, no hype, no bullet points. Start each with a strong one-sentence hook." The more specific the instruction, the better the output.

Repurposing is not copying your content — it is distilling your thinking for different contexts and different audiences. The same idea lands differently in an email versus a video script versus a carousel. AI makes the adaptation fast. Your original insight is still what makes it worth reading.

Building the Repurposing Workflow

Once you have the manual process working, you can semi-automate it. Build a document template — I call it a "repurposing brief" — that you fill out for each pillar piece. It includes the full text of the pillar, your target audience, the key takeaway you want each format to convey, and your brand voice guidelines. You paste this brief into your AI tool along with a specific prompt for each format.

More advanced setups use tools like Make to automate part of this. When a blog post is published, a trigger fires that sends the post content to an AI model via API, generates a set of social captions, and drops them into a Notion or Airtable content calendar for review. You still approve before publishing, but the heavy lifting is done automatically.

Quality Control and Voice Consistency

The biggest concern I hear from founders is: "Will it sound like me?" The honest answer is: only if you build in quality control. AI-generated content needs a human pass. Read every piece before it goes out. Fix anything that sounds generic, awkward, or off-brand. The more you refine the AI's output over time — and the better your prompts get — the less editing you will need to do.

Keep a "brand voice document" that you include in every repurposing prompt. This document captures your tone, the phrases you use, the things you never say, and two or three examples of content you have already written that represents your voice well. This single document dramatically improves AI output consistency.

The Time Maths

Here is the real case for this system. Creating ten pieces of content from scratch might take you five to eight hours. Creating one strong pillar piece takes one to two hours. Running AI repurposing and doing a light editing pass takes another hour. You have gone from eight hours of content creation to three — and the quality is often higher because more thought went into the original piece.

Over a month, this system can recover entire days of time while increasing your content output. That is not a side benefit — it is the whole point. Automation should buy you back the resource that matters most: your attention.
